NATURAL DYES

1. Natural Dyes Process

What are natural dyes?
Natural dyes are dyes or colorants derived mainly from plants and insects.

Common dyestuff
The majority of our natural dyes are vegetable dyes from plant sources –rootsbarkleaves, wood, rinds, fruit, flowers, seeds etc and insects.

Natural Dyes Process
The dye material is put in a pot of water and then the silks or cotton to be dyed are added to the pot, which is heated and stirred until the color is transferred.

How much time is needed for dyeing each colour?
Time varies. It can take from one hour to several days depending on a particular colour. Dyeing in natural color ikat is time consuming.

2. WEAVING PROCESS
Finally, after silkworms were raised, silks extracted, spun, reeled and dyed, it is time for weaving. Although weaving is not the most time-consuming, some pieces of silk fabrics and cotton cloth may take weavers several days to finish.
